With barely a year under their belt, Since Monroe have made it onto the airwaves and seem ready to make a big noise in a big pond. Currently on tour, though with no sign of London on the radar – the centre of the musical universe, non!? – their debut EP Lost Generation shows much promise. But then again, so did Betamax, the MiniDisc and 3D.
The first track, ‘DJ’, scores points simply for not having a prefix, though the lyrics slip noisily into cliché territory. “The drinks are flowing and the girls are glowing”, time to lay off the WKD I reckon. Do DJ’s still “keep spinning the records around”? The words are there but the images take me somewhere grubby.
With all four tracks hovering at the 3.5 minute mark, it’s a good start. There is riffage aplenty, channelling Muse (with a little bit of vocoder) on ‘DJ’; a pinch of harmony here and there, a la Weezer; and some Rage Against the Machine thrashing on ‘Satellites’…
