Led by Jade Barnett, whose powerful voice is going to get her lots of comparisons to Florence Welch – not that this is a bad thing – Shades of Jade are a London-based ‘soul rock’ quartet, and their music is certainly soulful, thanks in no small part to Barnett’s vocals.
For the group, melody comes first, and the EP kicks off with its title track, probably the most immediate song on the whole thing – and that’s saying something, as aside from the widescreen pop of Her Soul, all five of these songs have the ability to get stuck in the listener’s head.
They cover a lot of ground in 16 minutes, and each song makes an impact, even if there are more laid-back moments present as well; What If is the one song on which Barnett’s vocals truly soar, helped by a sky-scraping chorus and effective drumming.
